This is an article about a 19 year old mother in Manatee Country who neglected to seek help for her child who was in pain for ever a year with severe dental decay.  Her Medicaid coverage would not pay for the treatment at the office she went to. However, she REFUSED to seek money through child support payments from the father and she did not even bother trying to look for another specialist who would accept Medicaid or any other treatments that would be covered.

There are people commenting saying how it’s a crime that she was even jailed in the first place, and that the doctor should be in jail. Although I beleive it is unethical to turn away a patient with Medicaid, people are failing to see that she REFUSED to even attempt to find doctor for her child! Not only did she not bother to find another doctor who would accept medicaid, but she failed to seek other options that were given to her.

There are schools and nonprofits that will do dental work. In fact, just last week my class went to an elementary school to give dental exams on children of low-income families, and they were going to be treated by an organization… which from my understanding, was going to be either very affordable or free of charge.

Her child was in pain for over a year! Yes, of course that constitutes as child neglect. Not to mention, the child had baby bottle syndome - which occurs when you let your child sleep with a bottle usually containing carbohydrates such as milk, juice, or soda. She obviously wasn’t taking care of her child in the first place.

A couple months ago I went to an elementary school to give kindergarteners a lesson on oral health. I had them do activities including counting each other’s teeth. I walked around helping the kids, and I couldn’t believe the cavities you could see in their mouths. The holes in their teeth were so big you didn’t even need a light to see them. They were bigger than the teeth themselves and they needed to be pulled out. DO THESE PARENTS LET THEIR CHILDEN GARGLE WITH SODA? I was apalled. I don’t understand how parents are so uninformed about the health of their child, or why they refuse to seek help.

Your child is in horrible pain, how can that be ignored? This woman deserves to be charged.
